Churros - Queen Victoria Market

I am all about the balance in life. I steadfastly uphold the virtues of equality, fairness and justice for all. So how could I blog those wonderful jam doughnuts from the Queen Vic, and not do likewise with their equally famous cousins on the other side of the market, the Churros, or Spanish style donuts.

So, there ya go. Do I play fair or what?

And these extruded moreish icing sugared little babies come from this:

Anyway, I do have a confession. I ate these churros for breakfast this morning along with a steaming cup of hot chocolate ;-). Life doesn’t get any better than that, eh?

May I suggest all fried sweet and savoury dough aficionados visit the Guide To Ethnic Fried Doughs Around The World website. Uh huh. There is such a site and it’s scary.

Have you had the churros with chocolate from Movida? YUM!

Hi there Belinda - nope, I haven’t done the Movida churros yet, although I have heard *quite* a bit about them (in a disgustingly good way of course!). Please tell me they are incredibly horrible ;-)

You’re fairness personified! I haven’t had these from Queen Vic, but hey, that can be something for me to try out next weekend.

Movida Movida Movida! Those things are amazing. As soon as I saw the word “churros” on your blog I could taste that chocolate dunking sauce.

Why o why does deep fried dough taste SOOOOOO good? My poor hips!

    mellie:

Okay already….I’ll go to bloody Movida! You’ve twisted my arm ;-)

Lady Lunchalot - I feel your angst only too well!!!!!!

Hola! Balanced indeed, a churros on your right hip and jam doughnut on your left. I don’t know about the Movida thing, it sounds devastating.

Those are absolutely beautiful! To be honest, I’ve only had churros once, and that was from an appalling stall in a theme park in Korea - it was so bad and oily I’ve never tried them again! After reading all this though, perhaps I should give them a try?

And I completely forgot to thank you for the link - what a delicious site (the only thing missing is the recipes!)

Hola Neil! Hehe…perhaps I should change my name to dough-girl?!? If I have churros and doughnuts on my hips, then what the heck is that on my arse?!?

Hi there Ellie. I think you should most certainly give them a try. But why don’t you go straight to the top - go the Movida churros. I’m still yet to experience their greatness, but I have been told but all and sundry to go. And you’re welcome re: the link. I think most of the dough is the same, just fried/sugared in a variety of disgustingly good ways.

I was in Melbourne for a few days while on a uni exchange to Brisbane. The Queen Victoria market was one of my favourite places to visit in Melbourne! And the wineries around there are amazing too!

Hi there Brilynn! I’m glad you enjoyed the ‘Vic. Most of the “stuff” there is rather tacky, but the food is generally tops. I love grabbing a bite to eat and just watching the buskers / crowds etc.

What part of Canada do you hail from? I travelled there quite extensively back in 2004. I liken Canada to Australia, but without the sarcasm ;-) It’s a great place.

I’m from Ontario, a few hours North West of Toronto.
I found lots of things between Canada and Aus similar, but just slightly different, and the weather there is great!

Mmmmmm….breakfast Churros!! Sacrelicious! One of my best chidhood memories is going thre The “Vic” and munching on these babies!

Hey there Man At the Pub. Seriously…churros are the breakfast of champions. And it is a good one to tackle post-hangover as well (….or so I’ve been told ;-))

    Jeanne:

Mmmmm, churros. They sold them all over the place in Mexico. In Madrid they are apparently a post-clubbing or early morning thing, and by the time I woke up they were usually all gone. But the Gaucho Grill here in London serves some good (and not too oily!) ones. Deep-fried pastry rocks ;-)

    mellie:

Mmmmm…I’m so with you there Jeanne. Deep fried yeasty pastry goodness. The only thing better would be…well, er…ummm…perhaps I’ll leave that one there ;)
