Chickpea, Sunflower & Sesame Seed Fritters at Las Chicas

Las Chicas doesn’t pretend to be anything it’s not. The food is hearty, the atmosphere grungy / funky / comfortable and the front of house staff genuinely friendly. The shop runs long and thin parallel to Balaclava train station, so if you can’t squeeze onto a table inside, then make your way out back - a great dappled light courtyard awaits which is oh so conducive to just kicking back and forgetting about the fact you probably have to get back to work soon. Goddangit.

The Breakfast Blog rates it very highly, but I was here for lunch, and what I was instantly drawn to were the Chickpea, Sunflower and Sesame Seed Fritters with Yoghurt. For $8.50 one got five delectable balls of mooshed up chickpeas, seeds and spices. They were heavy on the cumin and coriander, tender as hell, and absolutely delicious. The thick greek yoghurt sprinkled with sesame and nigella seeds was the perfect tart accompaniment, although I would have loved a cucumber and tomato salad to make this “snack” more a “meal”.

I will certainly be back, but next time for breakfast. I so have to do the french toast.

If you go for breakie, you must try the polenta, sunflower and spinach loaf…two thick slices with mashed avo and fresh tomato salsa - seriously addictive! comes in a helf serve size too if you dont want to fill up on that and add some extras….

Half serve? My god Johanna…what hearsay doth thy speaketh! I’d go the full size for me, PLUS all the extras ;-)

Sounds very yummy though. I have a serious bent for avo, tomatoes and toast. To complete that holy trinity though, would be chevre. Mmm!

OMG!!!! Damn that sounds good! Alright, I’m going this weekend.

How bad would it be to split that and also a serve of their french toast? ;-)
