Gado Gado at Nudel Bar

Nudel bar is pretty much all about the noodle. That being said, the reason for my visit was not for their namesake. Our unusually hot weather necessitated something lighter, more flavoursome and somewhat salad-ish. And I’ve had a hankering for peanutty goodness for a few weeks now.
Essentially Gado Gado is a traditional Indonesian dish of vegetables (steamed and raw), potato and egg dressed in a peanut sauce. The Nudel version is quite an adventure. Piled high on the plate, one has to excavate the layers, revealing new levels of tastes and textures. Crisp cucumber batons, wedges of crunchy iceberg lettuce, tender green beans, boiled sliced saffron potatoes and bean sprouts rounded off the veggie component. Then smack bang in the centre one finds a soft-boiled egg that has been crumbed and deep-fried. Uh huh. Yum. To finish, the whole lot is smothered in a peanut sauce and garnished with crunchy fried shallots and sliced spring onion. As long as you don’t think how bad the peanut sauce is for you (…or the side of roti ;-)), it is a magnificently healthy dish.

I’m an old fan of Nudel Bar, especially Thai Fried Noodles.
But the question on everyone’s lips is - What about the Other Restaurant, you lunched at today. So far we have 2 blog reviews, one supportive but unsure if the price was justified, one negative. I’m looking forward to your experience of it.

Ooh, the nudel bar is fantastic - try the cold green tea noodles on a hot day, delightfully refreshing!

Hi AOF - Roger roger, my thoughts coming up
Hey there Ellie! Are the green tea noodles the ones with the avocado and smoked salmon? A lady at the table next to me had it, and I must admit to suffering some order envy. But I satisfied my peanut craving, and will definitely be back to try others.

Once again, the egg would sell it to me. The rest sounds pretty good too and just right for a light bite on a hot day.
Cheers Gillian

Hey John - I’m glad you enjoy reading my blog. Let me tell you, the research I must undertake for it ain’t that half bad either!!
I really enjoyed your version of the Gado. It is one of the better ones I’ve had in Melbourne. I will be back to try the green tea noodles as recommended by ellie (above). Or do you have another signature dish you’d like to recommend?
Oh…and thanks to you for running such a funky little establishment!

It was delicious! A rather healthy meal, notwithstanding the side of roti and the peanut sauce
