Chicken Chasseur or Flemish Beef Pie
Cost: $12.50 (…but it comes with a quenelle of potato mash, pea stoemp and gravy)
The Belgian Beer Cafe is better known for its beer, pots of mussels and pomme frits than for its pies. But in the spirit of the Inaugural “We Do Chew Our Food” Great Pie Round Up, I thought I would sample one of their lesser know menu items. And I must say, I am somewhat impressed. The few crisp Hoegaardens prior to consumption did nothing to influence that summation either
The Elegant Gourmand and I divied up the two pies on offer- a Flemish Beef Pie that was tender and meaty in all the right places, but lacked a punchy savoury taste. Then a Chicken Chasseur Pie, which was an absolute winner. A flavoursome wine infused tomato gravy bound tender chicken pieces, mushrooms, sliced onions, garlic and thyme into a tasty little parcel. The pastry was flaky and crisp, although the light gravy tended to saturate in places, causing sogginess (but it was moreish nonetheless). The filling was generous and of good quality; it was good to find real meat in a pie for a change. The sides on the other hand were both hit and miss. The hit was the use of real fresh peas in the pea stoemp (aka. mushy peas), the miss was the cold mash potato. But it was a nicely presented dish. Perhaps a little pricey for a “bar snack” though.
Rating:
Chicken Chasseur Pie: 5
Flemish Beef Pie: 3.5
The Beer: Priceless

That Tripel Karmeliet was superb. Three grain goodness!

Hi there Elegant Gourmand
It was pure bliss to be sitting outside on such a temperate Melbourne evening, people watching, drinking belgian beers and eating rather good pastry products with your wonderful self. I concur re: the Tripel Karmeliet. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to do single grain again. Go multigrain!

I feel so guilty… I haven’t done my review for the Great Pie Round Up yet… I’ve had a pie that I want to review, but just haven’t made it to the computer! Will have to do that, possibly tomorrow… but this weekend I’m going to take some time out and check out that pie at the Belgian Beer Cafe.
