Kickapoo Joy Juice

20070330KickapooJoyJoice

Inspired by the tonic of the same name in Al Capp’s comic strip Li’l Abner, this amusingly titled soft drink, Kickapoo Joy Juice, is an interesting bevvy (more so in name than taste). I am not one for carbonated soda, but I just had to give it a try. Hmm…Mountain Dew-ish, lemonade-ish…and no kickapoo whatsoever about it ;-)

    Hi Mellie,
Just wanted to write and say what a fan of your blog I am, without wanting to sound simpering! Keep up the great work (especially including all the mouthwatering photos).
I too have recently started working in the CBD and am looking for delicious food (especially spicy SE Asian) near my building. I’m guessing you work somewhere in the north eastern part of the CBD, given the preponderance of reviews in that sector :) What about down towards King St… any recommendations??
    Cheers,
    mutemonkey

    Hi mutemonkey,

I used to work down that end of town too, and I must say, it’s a bit of a culinary wasteland unfortunately, for cheap eats anyway.

the only half decent SE Asian place I can think of is Oz Asia at 232 King St. I also quite like Sataybar in Flinders Lane: http://www.satay.com.au/

I used to go to Blufish all the time, which is quite possibly the best fish and chipper in the CBD. it’s listed as 620 Collins but it’s really down the small laneway wedged in between an apartment complex. Down that same laneway you will find some really great places like Choux, that serves French crepes, Minx that whips up some of the best coffee around, and the Wonderful Garden, a hole-in-the wall old school chinese that has the best home made dimmies in town. Expect long queues come winter time.

Thank you for the compliment mutemonkey – I will be sure to keep up the great work. It won’t be any hardship, let me tell you :-)

Unfortunately I haven’t got down your end of town too much, though I should start exploring it because I’m starting to reach saturation point up my end. But hopefully EG has been able to provide you with a few recommendations that will keep you busy. Let us know how they go.

Thanks for the tips for this culinary wasteland, elegantgourmand!

Yeah, I’ve been to Oz Asia. The nasi lemak wasn’t bad, but not nearly as good as at Norsiah’s Kitchen, a funny little bain marie place up on Swanston St near Melbourne Uni. The mee goreng my friend ordered at Oz Asia looked rather uninspiring. Happily, yesterday I discovered that Yen Sushi Noodle (of Centre Place fame) has opened another branch in a mini foodcourt near Lt Collins and King.

I look forward to trying out sataybar and the other laneway places you mentioned, and to continue reading your blogs.. :)

    Thanks again, you two!

Hi guys, I”ve tried to get Kickapoo today at Hawker’s Cafe but unfortunately they were out… damn! Anyway, I think I just wanted to say “I’ll have a kickapoo please” hehehe…

  • mellie

Hey cherrie pie – uh huh, it is too irresistable, huh? But if you’re really hankering for it, they sell it in the asian grocers that is next to Coles in Melbourne Central (sorry…can’t remember their name).

  • Cherrie Pie

OH thanks Mellie. I know the store you are talking about. I’ll pop in.
