Walker’s Doughnuts

Shop 9/2 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne
Phone 03 9662 2254

Here’s another doughnut shop to add to the ever expanding (in more ways than one) doughtnut landscape in Melbourne.

20070603Walkers

Walker’s Doughnuts have been around for a lil’ while now, sharing corner space with the wonderfully named Lord of the Fries. The kitschy nostalgic U.S. themed signage is pretty much indicative of what you’re going to find in this shop – doughnuts, hotdogs, American candy bars and soda pop. The signage also indicates that their classic glaze jelly doughnut is both original and famous. A quick search on the internet reveals the term “original glazed” is used pretty much exclusively by our mates over at KK, and as for famous, well, I ain’t heard of them before.

But, to the donut. Surprisingly, the dough wasn’t overly sweet (nice change), and was super soft in a very fresh kind of way. The original glaze, which had been somewhat disurbed by the packaging above, was the main source of sweetness on the first bite. The second bite yielded the other source, a generous pool of liquid raspberry jelly/jam that almost exploded out and down my skivvy (caught just in time!). I don’t know if I would call the doughnut fantastic – as it just seemed just a little too processed. I much prefer the hand rolled sugar-coated jam-filled yeasty little beauties at Queen Vic. But if you’re after that oh-so-bad-for-you hit of carbs, this will certainly satisfy.

EG, who has a more savoury bent, tried the hot dog. Unfortunately the first choice of ‘dog, the New Yorker, was unavailable due to a lack of onion relish. So he settled for the Dodger Dog, a footlong steamed frankfurter slathered in tomato ketchup, mustard, onions and cheese. Thumbs up to the bun, the dog and the ketchup. Thumbs down to the mustard, onion and the cheap arse shredded cheese.

Mmm doughnuts. Queen Vic market churros are good – yet I confess, I haven’t had the good ol’ American jam filled ones yet! That doughnut you have there looks rather like a krispy kreme one (which I have sworn never ever to eat again – they’re bad for my self-control). Mmm. Yum..

  • Mel.

(I really only left that comment so I felt like I justified the length of time I spent drooling over your post :) )

Hey mel – uh huh, I know your pain. I too haven’t succumbed to the KK experience in Melbourne. I’ve had them abroad, and know that as soon as I have one here, it will be all downhill from there ;-)

But you SO must try the jam ones at the Queen Vic. They are a must for any doughnut lover.

  • Alan

Awesome looking hot dog right there.

  • mellie

Hey alan – hmm, you like hotdogs, eh? Well swing by sweet cherrie pie for some more hot dog goodness :-)

  • Egghead

I agree about avoiding Krispy Kreme. Dangerous donuts, too yum to stop.
I am a bit of a donut lover and thought I’d let everyone know what’s around town.

As mentioned by Mel the churros (sausage shaped donuts with icing sugar) at the Queen Victoria Market are quite good.
The round jam filled donuts from the van at the back of the food court are very good and often sell out.
If you go inside the food court there is an Italian cafe that has donuts. I like the small sultana ball donuts, they are very good. They also have jam donuts and custard filled if I recall correctly.

Speaking of churros: Mo Vida (across from ACMI down an alley) have churros with chocolate sauce for about $9.
I saw that Flinders St Station has a chocolate churros shop opening soon also.

When I was a kid, we would go to High Point (West) a bit and there was a shop called Downey Flake Donuts which was awesome. They had split donut filled with cream and topped with blue sugar string stuff. Man they were good.

I think it was Myer Melbourne that used to have lamington donuts. They were so good.

Anyway, hope that’s got the drool rolling…haha.

  • mellie

Hey ya egghead – thanks for your recommendations and continuing the drool fest :-)

Funnily, when I did the foodie tour at Vic Market recently, they gave us a free coffee voucher for Verona Coffee. This is the very place you mention, with the small sultana doughnuts. I did eye them off, but having consumed a plethora of free samples during the tour, I had to pass. But I must go back and try these after your recommendation.

I’ve had the movida churros too. I though the doughnut/churros itself were really good, but didn’t think so much of the chocolate sauce.

I’d heard mention of the new place at Flinders. From what I understand it’s on the opposite side near the pub somewhere?!? Will have to keep my ear to the ground.

  • Egghead

Hey Mellie: I read your review of Mo Vida and agreed with your description of the sauce. I haven’t had it but I imagined a thick chocolatey good to dip the churros into.

The new Churros & Chocolate place looks like it will be on the concourse facing the ACMI info booth.

Great blog, keep up the good work. Glad to see other people who love their food and aren’t shy about talking about it.

  • Egghead

    Correction: thick chocolatey GOO

  • mellie

Thanks for that egghead. And I’m certainly not shy about talking/writing about my love of food ;-) Some would say obsessed even…lol

  • The Doughnut Man

Walkers make some pretty solid doughnuts…

Here is one I Tried today

  • mellie

Hey the doughnut man – but where’s the picture?!? I just see an empty pack. Or was it too good to resist ;-)

  • Try the chocolate eclairs also. I heard someone saying they were going to go back to the store and spend $20 on buying stuff so I had to try it. Told two friends by SMS straight after to go there.

  • mellie

Thanks for the tip Tim! I’ll give them a go next time I’m down that way.

And if you haven’t tried it already, Beard Papa (just a few doors up) does some wonderful custard filled profiteroles.

  • winky

Best hotdogs in Melbourne hands down!

  • Hey winky – I walked past the other day and noticed they’d brought the ‘dogs’ outside with a street cart. But unlike the street vendors in the US, they unfortauntely didn’t have a plethora of serve yourself condiments/pickles. Ohh, how I yearn for this.

  • Tas

Preston Market has the best hot jam donuts. I find the Victoria Market donuts a bit watery to tell the truth.

  • Watery? How can doughnuts be watery?

  • MaryS

I hear that Walker’s Doughnuts are going HOT JAM in a couple of weeks’ time. Keep your eyes and ears open…

  • ruby

wow! hot doughnuts! That’s exciting, hmn………….yummy………..

  • Aaron

Do they sell the drink Dr. Pepper in bottles?

  • Hey Aaron – from memory, only cans.

  • emma

their donuts are good. their coffee and chai latte is better… in fact, very impressive at times. hot dogs are average but i love hot dogs always so i don’t mind. ha

    WALKER’S DOUGHNUTS IS THE BEST!!!
As an expatriate from the USA, and a guy who _has_ had Krispy Kremes in America (and yeah, it takes a LOT of exercise to make one feel less guilty), and _then_ tried them over here, I can attest the fact that the OZ version of KK’s doughnuts (or donuts) come in a sad second. But until recently, KK’s was the _best_ donut I found in Melbourne (Donut King and all the others were — yeeeeech!)

Then (THEN!!! Cue the sound of heavenly harps), I stumbled across Walkers while in the CBD.

WALKERS KNOWS HOW TO MAKE GREAT DONUTS (or doughnuts). Simple as that. Full stop. Furthermore, one can get a donut which _just_ sugar on it (not cinnamon and sugar — what IS it with you Ossies and cinnamon? Or the overuse of “sprinkles”?)! And the chocolate on their chocolate glazed donuts tastes _chocolatey_ — even a day after being hauled home on the train! (Unlike Donut King, which puts something amazingly awful tasting on thier chocolate glazed donuts –and the KK I was last living near (in Knox) seemed to have stored their chocolate — or even regular — glazed donuts in a freezer and then thawed them out. And they had a bit, _too much_ glaze on them).

Take it from one who lived in the LAND OF THE GIANTS (AKA the Land of Lots of Carbs and High Fructose Corn Syrup): WALKER’S DOUGHNUTS IS THE BEST!!!

Now back to your regularly scheduled comments, signed, Blimpy (AKA DT Shindler)

  • Thanks for your passionate response Blimpy (aka DT Shindler). Tell me, what are you thoughts on the ol’ Queen Vic Market ones? Personally, they’re my favourite :-)

  • D.T. Shindler

    Hey, Mellie (AKA…Mellie),

I’ve actually never seen the Vic market doughnuts. Embarrassed to say I’ve only been to the Queen Vic Market once, thus far. Not because I didn’t like it, or because I’m not a POM :) but because Melbourne is a veritable cornucopia of great markets. But I enjoyed the Queen Vic Market — and picked up some great fruit, veggies and other stuff. I’ll watch for those donuts (gotta use both spellings) next time I head to the Queen Vic market.

    Cheers!

  • D.T. Shindler

Mellie — just noticed the watery comment above. Actually, I understand what the person posting meant. The glaze ontop of the particular doughnut isn’t quite glaze — it has more of syrup consistancy, so it starts to drip off as you’re eating (yeech). On the other end of the spectrum, the KK donuts I tried often had glaze that was so thick, and hard, it almost crunched when you bit into it.

Like good sex, making the perfect donut is an artform. So says the Confucius of the USA (AKA, Blimpy).
The ladies at Walker’s Doughnuts — especially YOU, Numritha, if you’re “listening” — are culinary artists. :)

(And yes, I finally said your name correctly: noom-rith-Uh).
    :)
