Yes, more Japanese Kit Kats

20080113KitKatTorokeruZeitakuRingo.jpg

EG spotted some new Japanese Kit Kat flavours when we were in the Great Eastern Grocer (185 Russell St, Mebourne) the other day. His eye for such things is ever so attuned after our recent hunt in trip to Japan (read here and here). These deluxe versions are a little different. For starters they are swankily packaged in a slim black box with a neat design and gold embossed kanji. The fingers too are individually wrapped and are about twice as wide as the standard stick. Inside, two layers of wafer contribute towards a crunchy snap, but on top of that is a thick layer of flavoured cream, which to be honest, I don’t think I’m that keen on as it has a bit of a waxy mouth feel. I think this phenomenon is much improved by chilling the bars in the fridge for a couple of hours.

Anwyay, the Kit Kat above is the Torokeru Zeitaku Ringo, which with the help of some online dictionaries literally translates as “To be enchanted with luxurious apple”. I was certainly enchanted with the smell - on opening the pack I was near bowled over by the aroma of fuji’s. The taste - well, there is certainly a sweet apple taste to it, but it also tastes somewhat like those spongy banana lollies.

The Kit Kat Torokeru Maccha, or “To be enchanted with luxurious Green Tea”, is a much better flavour, although compared to the standard maccha, it is very very mild. EG hit the nail on the head when he said it tasted like a green tea ice cream.

Aaah!!! Those are the cream kitkats we ate in Osaka!! Yay, I can get them at home! The mattcha ones are waay better than the apple ones, in my opinion. I liked the fact that they weren’t too strongly flavoured - I think I went OTT on green tea in Japan. In some places they make it so damn strong!

Oh man, and I had a Meiji brand rich mattcha milk chocolate bar in Tokyo, which was BRIGHT green, and tasted just as strong. *Bleurgh*

Hey sarah - ahh, your recent Japan posts have been making me travel sick!

I don’t think I can ever OD on maccha flavour. I just luurve it :-) The bitterer and stronger the better!

I must admit I did get insanely happy when I saw the deluxe Kit Kats on sale. My fingers are crossed they bring in more of the regional special editions. I’ve seen the caramel, bitter orange and cacao versions here already.
