Meiji has once again provided a worthy candidate for my peculiar obsession with kooky Japanese sweets. Tasty Crunch are nuggets of Hokkaido milk chocolate studded with (the packaging doesn’t lie) salted french fry potato chips. And to be honest, they’re actually not that half bad!
I spotted this snack in the Great Eastern (Russell St) and Central Grocery (Melbourne Central) stores around town. So if ya hankerin for both a sweet and savoury snack, this this will surely satisfy – on both fronts – in the one snack.

Don’t go to Central Grocery at Melourne Central!Everything is overpriced there. A packet of Marie Biscuits(Khong Guan)I love KG becoz its a spore brand n I’m from Spore haha, costs me $1.50 at Laguna @QV but it cost me $3.3o at Central Grocery!!!
Gee Mel, you will try anything!!! You really do suffer for your cause!!! Love you for it! Vida x
Hey fel – thanks for the tip! Yeah, it is certainly a little more expensive than some of the other asian grocers around town. What part of Singapore are you from? I was there last year.
Hiya vida – yes, I certainly do suffer for my art (well, my waistline is anyway!).
You mean you’ve never had chocolate covered Pringles?!
OMG, must be an American thing, where just about everything salty is covered in chocolate – pretzels, etc. I’ve even had chocolate covered corn flakes – which taste better than they sound!
M
I must find these meiji marvels! I love the combination and wish I had that for a little afternoon pick me up right now…
Hey emzeegee – actually I must confess I have never had the pringles/chocolate combo, but must admit to the pretzel chocolates (OMG). How’s business going?
Hey there foodhoe – we all need afternoon pickups. In fact, I need one now!
Hope you liked Singapore! I am staying in Pasir Ris which was the in the East side of the country, but Singapore is so tiny! Its smaller than Melbourne itself I think! hahaha. So do u like Singapore food? I think the best Singapore food in Melbourne can be found at Chom Chom at Bourke St. But do u have any other recommmendations?
Hey again fel – yeah, I love Singapore (although I do find it a little humid!). I actually stayed in Pasir Ris (block 195) with EG’s family – so I know the area very well!
I absolutely love Singaporean food – especially kaya toast and chicken rice (to name but a few). I really like Straits Cafe in Doncaster. Have you tried it?
I haven’t been to Chom Chom yet, which is surprising because I both live and work in the city.
Milk chocolate and crispy french fries? I don’t think so.
Don’t knock it till you try it Nate. It actually works very well!
I thought these were a bit funky because of the cheese powder added to them. There are some excellent salty-potato treats around, but this wasn’t one of them IMO. I reviewed it here: http://japanesesnackreviews.blogspot.com/2008/10/hokkaido-choco-potato-crunch.html
Hi there Orchid! Hmm…I didn’t pick up on any funky flavours, although I must admit I only got to sample one of the chocolates as I shared the calories around with my workmates
But cheese powder?!? What were they thinking?!?
BTW, absolutely love your blog. Gee..and I thought my obsession was bad. You’ve got it worse than I do!
I have had salted potato chips with one side dipped in chocolate from Hokkaido. Must be a modern local delicacy. I was sceptical, but ended up loving them!
I don’t think you can go too wrong with salt and chocolate. Just like salt and caramel. Yum!
