Shoya - Chef’s Omakase

5 Market Lane, Melbourne
Phone: 03 9650 0848

I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with Shoya (you can read about previous experiences here, here and here).  They have often taken my breath away with the quality of their ingredients and execution of their dishes, hence the reason I keep returning. At other times, well…I am [...]

Dinkum Pies

29 Block Place, Melbourne
Phoe 03 9654 6792

The Meat Pie is as iconic as they come as far as Australia’s National Dish is concerned. This hand held package of pastry, meat and gravy is as much lauded as it is loathed (body parts and gravy anyone?). Despite that, I reckon you can’t beat a good meat [...]

Concorde Crepes

Cnr Elizabeth St and Little Bourke St
(outside GPO)

I had managed to elude the siren-like yell of Concorde Crepes for months, despite the alluring aroma of cooking batter wafting down the street near the GPO.  It was just never the right time to partake in the extra calories; I was always coming back from or going [...]

Apart from eating, drinking [...]

Von Haus

1a Crossley Street, Melbourne
(behind The Paperback)
Phone (03) 9662 2756

Von Haus has been the darling of the dead-tree media the last few months, which is probably reason why I’ve held off writing about it.  The problem is, Von Haus is cool, and oh so cool at that. It is also teeny-tiny, and when EG and I first [...]

Bento No.8

Top tier: Umeboshi plum (mmm, I so love these at the moment), and Japanese short grain rice mixed with a few multigrains.

Bottom tier: Pan fried chicken, steamed broccoli stems (don’t let them go to waste!), cherry tomatoes, sauted red peppers with daikon and sesame.
The pan fried chicken was really easy to make, and was lovely [...]

Nihonshu Shochu and Sake Bar

Oooh…I can’t wait for this one to open! Nearing completion, Nihonshu Shochu and Sake Bar is the new sister to Izakaya Chuji (165 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne).  I’ve been peeking through the window when I stroll past, spying a wonderful handcrafted timber counter being built before my eyes.  Mmm…I can imagine sitting at it eating [...]

Bento No.7

Top tier: Japanese short grain rice cooked with a tablespoon of multigrain mix garnished with three shelled edamame, umeboshi plum.

Bottom tier: teriyaki marinated beef rolls wrapped around sauted garlic chives, carrot and sesame kinpira, steamed broccoli, shelled edamame, simmered kabocha (pumpkin).
The teriyaki beef rolls were the star of this particular bento.  I’d bought a couple [...]

Bistro Guillaume

Crown Entertainment Complex
8 Whiteman Street, Southbank
Phone 03 9693 3888

There is something about the French that just does it for me. I don’t know if it’s the accent, the joie de vive, or the gratuitous use of butter and cream in their cooking. But my heart just skips a beat at the mere mention of such [...]

Bento No.6

This is one for the ovo-vegetarians out there.
Top tier:  tamago (rolled Japanese egg omelette), Japanese rice sprinkled with roasted black sesame seeds.
Bottom tier: sauteed garlic chives and fresh shitake mushrooms, carrot and burdock kinpira, steamed broccoli, simmered kabocha (pumpkin).
