Farewell Greenhouse

The Amphitheatre at Federation Square
Corner Swanston & Flinders Streets, Melbourne

One of the downsides of being so busy in life (as mentioned in my last post), was not being able to post this while Greenhouse by Joost was still around!  This fantastic temporary installation unfortunately closed at the end of last month, although I’ve heard whispers that due to it’s popularity, it may be popping up in another guise in another location soon (fingers crossed!).

Anyway, the reason I’m posting is that I was ever so impressed with their fare, which just screamed fabulous produce.  Above, a little square quiche (with killer shortcrust pastry), filled with silky-soft egg curd, brussel sprouts (my favourite!), roasted pumpkin, black kalamata olives, goats chevre and pine nuts.  I can’t begin to tell you how good this was, especially served with a perky well dressed balsamic side salad and a thirst quenching, tart homemade lemonade. By the way, I’m sooo in love with their innocent bystander glasses.  Anyone know where I can pick some up?!?

Dan chose the very dense ciabatta stuffed full with sopressa salami, roasted red peppers, sliced jerusalem artichoke and peppery rocket.

For dessert, I just had to order the rugelach – thick pastry rolled around macerated raisins, nuts, apple and spices.  A divine example of this Jewish treat.

Oooh….come back Greenhouse!

  • Ummmm Innocent Bystander perhaps?????? No seriously I am up at IB about once a week could always enquire for you.

  • Hey Dani – I checked out their website, but didn’t see as much on there. But then I thought that Greenhouse may have, due to their recycled and sustainble ethos, obtained them some other bizarre way.

But if you could ask, that would be fabulous! Certainly let me know!

  • The glasses that are pictured – are these the glasses you are after or are the a taller moulded glass wider at the top and thinner at the bottom with a lip half way down. I think i will be up there on Fri.

  • Yup – the ones pictured. I kind of thought they might be cut down wine bottles?!?

  • Am sitting at Innocent Bystander now and no one recognises these glasses – definitely not theirs is the reply. Still a mystery then.

  • Hmm…a mystery indeed. Do the Innocent Bystander winebottles have their name embossed in the side, about half way up the bottle? They almost looked like cut down wine bottles, but smoothed for the drinkers protection ;-)

  • **update**
The Director of Greenhouse responded to my query and apparently they commissioned a glazier to cut/sand innocent bystander wine bottles for them. So my guess was pretty spot on.

  • Well done! I was trying to think whether IB had this embossed on their bottles but didn’t think so – perhaps an older style bottle. I must stop being lazy and go downstairs and check our many bottles (I drink them too quickly to remember). You need to get out to the Yarra Valley – we have been out their the last two Fridays and it is so quiet – they need the business! Let me know if you go and I’ll meet up. Better yet organise a food blogger day out their to support the region.
