Travelling Edible Plants

20090514EdibleTravellingPlants.jpg

Came across an interesting find on my way home from work today. On the windowsill of the ol’ Peony Garden in Little Lonsdale Street, I noticed a row of Starbucks cups sprouting green leaves.

And on the cup was a little sticker telling me that it was a travelling edible plant.  How fantastic!

So I picked “Sophia” (who drinks decaf), who I hope will grow strong and plentiful in the Melbourne CBD. I’m not sure what edible plant Sophia is yet.  Will keep you posted.

  • What a cool idea. They probably got a whole bunch of cups from somewhere when all the starbucks closed and are now doing something great with them. I love how this idea makes food gardening a little more accessible and a little less scary :)

awesome. u think there are sme still there? i might get me one

tried to work out what plant it was on the photo but couldnt. it doesnt look like any of the brassicas that i am growing at the moment. what else can they can be growing this time of year? maybe some sort of spinach/ salad leaf?

  • What a cute, green (‘scuse the pun) idea! Trust a Melbournite to think of it :)

Oh i saw some at Prahran Train Station on Greville st the other day, but i thought it was a school project or something.. wish i had a closer look now!

  • How cool is that! Keep me posted how it turns out.

  • Wow, this is such a brilliant concept. Perhaps I will set up something like this in Hobart and see what happens!

  • Hi lili – yes, most definitely a cool idea :-) I think all the cups were pre-loved – mine was formerly a decaf for Sophia. Perhaps the person who made them was an ex-employee of Starbucks?!? Oh..the mind wonders…

Hi Ran – unfortauntely, they were all gone by the next day…hopefully to an appreciative home. I’m still stumped as to what it is. It doesn’t look salad-y or chard-y to me. In fact, the leaf looks like a strawberry.

Hi fooderati – a very green idea, with a very good message.

Hey Luxe – hmm, they must be moving around. Any more spotted elsewhere?

Hi anna – will definitely keep you posted. And if it’s strawberries, well, I may need to make some jam (if I can hold myself back from eating them straight off the plant!).

Hi Maggie – go for it! Random acts of kindness is good for the karma :-)

  • this is too cool! i wish i had one! what a fantastic idea :)

    Hi!

I saw these in Little Lonsdale St too, but by the time I found them they had all blown over in the wind so I couldn’t take an intact plant. I took the label off because I wanted to contact the person responsible and write an article about the travelling plants. Then I lost the label. I can’t see the email address in the photos – do you think you could email it to me?

Thanks and good luck with your yummy plant!

    xx

  • Hey there stickyfingers – ahh..it all becomes clearer.

Hi kate – I haven’t seen any more about, but hey, you can make your own!

Hiya Renata – you can contact them at tgwepp AT gmail DOT com.

  • That is such a cute notion! I love the part where you should contact ‘the parents’ :)
