Just wanted to give a thumbs up to a great burger joint in Lorne.  “The bottle of milk”, despite its unusual name, offers an impressive selection of twenty-one mouth watering burger variations at lunch (…and three at breakfast).  The venue is urban and chic, the staff hip and happening, and my god, the chips worth driving 157km for.

Above are our two burgers, all served up on awesome La Madre buns.  I went the Bingo Bango; grilled chicken breast pieces with lettuce, tomato, red onion, coriander, house mayo and home made chilli paste ($13).  The chilli paste had an impressive kick, which was tempered with the good thick mayo.

Dan went the tofu option, which included a big thick steak of marinated tofu, lettuce, tomato, onion, alfalfa sprouts and house made relish ($11).  It had nice chargrilled flavours, and the relish added a lovely sweetness.

And these are the hot chips ($4) with a choice of house mayo or ketchup, or both (come on, you gotta have both!).  Dang, they were some of the best chips I’ve had in ages, double fried for extra crispness and flavour.

  • I’m a bit burger obsessed myself at the moment. It’s the great Aussie take-away, beachside.

I do remember driving down the Great Ocean Road as a kid, and begging for fish and chips in Apollo Bay. For some reason, and I have never yet met anyone who would disagree, fish and chips from Apollo Bay are the best in Victoria.

On that note (can you tell I am avoiding work today) Tasmania is suffering from a distinct lack of good fish and chips/ burgers assorted Australian style take-aways. You’d think, being a water town, but nope.

  • I am in need of a good burger right now. The chips loook AMAZING

I think Bottle of Milk are up there with are the best burgers in VIC.

They do fantastic breakfast as well! (we had to go back before we headed home…)The serving utensils were very cute china and my boyfriend couldn’t stop raving about the museli with poached fruit the whole way home. I was more than content with my poached eggs on sourdough.

It’s also a plus if you like having young hip men cook and serve you yummy food by the sea.

  • mmm..those chips remind of those at Meat & Wine Co’s. Amazing.

With the summer months finally arriving, this will give me a good reason to head to the coast

  • Hey there Maggie (btw – thanks for the retweet!) – I agre with the fish and chips in Apollo Bay. We *always* stop by for a piece of fish, chips and a potato cake on the way through :-) Hey, are any of those fish and chippers on the pier near Mures any good?

Hiya Penny – go the chips. they are awesome!

Hi Sarah – thanks for the tip on breakfast! I too think they are one of the better burgers I’ve had around Vic, and were just totally impressed with the freshness of ingredients. The placed just felt so hip (..and yes, the hipsters helped!)

Hey Adrian – do you need an excuse to go down the coast?!? I have many :-)

  • Oh yum.

I think I might have to do a little road trip next weekend…

  • I was there this NY day! Lots of hazy young folk from the Falls festival ordering up Bacon and Egg rolls til they started the full menu.

The chips are amazing. The bowl we had was sprinkled with rosemary, which just tipped it over the edge into otherworldly deliciousness.

The Hot Lentil Burger is amazing as well. A spicy and nuanced lentil patty instead of the typical tired, bland and disinterested vegie pattie.

i dont know about the burgers, but those guys are seeexxyyy

  • Hey anna – the chips alone are worth the road trip.

Hiya Misterhorsey – glad you enjoyed it! I’m sure the bacon & egg rolls would have been VERY popular for post concert munchies ;-)

Hi kate and B – uh huh, concur with you there!

  • [...] to Melbourne.  My friend told me to try the coffee (and burgers) at The Bottle of Milk in Lorne. Mellie went there last year and enjoyed the burgers and chips. The coffee is roasted by 7 Seeds (my [...]

yeah the chips are amazing, i was driving down the great ocean road a few weeks ago to show some friends from europe, when we stopped for lunch and coffee. i was so amazed at the standard of coffee in a tourist town, its so often the case with tourist towns that the coffee and food standard is below average, not the case with milk bottle, me and my friends will be back for a pickle burger!!!

  • Hey will – glad you enjoyed it. Ahh, I still dream about those chips!

I drove past the other day (we were on our way to lunch in Wye River, so really couldn’t stop for a feed), and the place was super busy!
