We may try to post a few from the road, but to be honest there may not be too much time for that. But keep your eyes peeled for our return in Early November – there will be a plethora of gastronomic experiences to share.

Till then, take care! And if my archives don’t keep you amused, then swing by some of the other Melbourne food blogs listed in the sidebar to the right.

Looks like one of my photos got an honorable mention in the August edition of DMBLGiT (Does My Blog Look Good in This?) event as hosted by ToastPoint. Apparently my “whimsically titled ‘Blood Orange which is just about to be turned into a Blood Orange Rosemary Marmalade’ was a crisp, sharp shot … reminiscent of the taste of citrus “which is about to be turned into marmalade.” An all-around excellent photo”.

You can find the recipe for the Blood Orange & Rosemary Marmalade here.

Las Chicas doesn’t pretend to be anything it’s not. The food is hearty, the atmosphere grungy / funky / comfortable and the front of house staff genuinely friendly. The shop runs long and thin parallel to Balaclava train station, so if you can’t squeeze onto a table inside, then make your way out back – a great dappled light courtyard awaits which is oh so conducive to just kicking back and forgetting about the fact you probably have to get back to work soon. Goddangit.

The Breakfast Blog rates it very highly, but I was here for lunch, and what I was instantly drawn to were the Chickpea, Sunflower and Sesame Seed Fritters with Yoghurt. For $8.50 one got five delectable balls of mooshed up chickpeas, seeds and spices. They were heavy on the cumin and coriander, tender as hell, and absolutely delicious. The thick greek yoghurt sprinkled with sesame and nigella seeds was the perfect tart accompaniment, although I would have loved a cucumber and tomato salad to make this “snack” more a “meal”.

I will certainly be back, but next time for breakfast. I so have to do the french toast.
